Online Presentation: Dr. Sara Bois, Scotch Broom - Getting swept away by a beautiful invasive @ Online

Full title: ‘Getting swept away by a beautiful invasive; investigating a naturalized Nantucket species’

Dr. Sarah Bois, Director of Research and Education at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation, will present on a grant-funded island-wide investigation of the non-native invasive plant, Scotch Broom (Cytisus scoparius).

Scotch Broom has been introduced to many parts of the world as an ornamental for its evergreen foliage and beautiful yellow flowers. In parts of North America, it has become one of the worst invaders. With funding from the New England Botanical Club Les Mehrhoff award, Sarah is investigating the extent of the Scotch Broom presence on the island, a first step in understanding its invasiveness on Nantucket. Sarah will discuss invasion history, impacts to native habitats, and the effects of climate change on this species. She’ll also discuss how you can be involved in the project and native plant conservation.

Sarah oversees the LLNF research program where research is used to inform the LLNF education program for people of all ages and backgrounds. Research also informs the management and conservation efforts on the LLNF 275 acre property at Eel Point.

Cosponsored with the Linda Loring Nature Foundation. Free admission, but registration is required.

Online Presentation: Seth Engelbourg, Grassland Restoration and its Benefits for Birds @ Online
Dec 9 @ 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm
Online Presentation: Seth Engelbourg, Grassland Restoration and its Benefits for Birds @ Online

Seth Engelbourg, the Naturalist Educator and Program Manager at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation, will present on a multi-year, grant-funded ecological restoration project. LLNF was awarded a grant from the Robert F. Schumann Foundation to improve habitat for grassland and heathland bird populations by removing non-native invasive tree species and restoring native vegetation.

Seth will discuss the pre-management monitoring that was conducted this year as well as our overall goals for the lifespan of the project. Global avian population studies show that grassland-dependent birds are one of the groups in fastest decline. This project will examine whether we are able to help support these species on a local level by restoring their habitat.

In addition to this project, Seth develops and leads LLNF’s environmental education programs for people of all ages and backgrounds, including our Birding Field Trips. He also assists with LLNF’s research program, particularly with projects related to birds as his academic background includes experience with avian population monitoring.

Cosponsored with the Linda Loring Nature Foundation. The program is free admission, but registration is required.
