Welcome mortals!
In honor of Spooky Season, the Atheneum invites you to come to the Great hall to enjoy some classic horror films from the early and mid 20th century! Light refreshments will be provided.
This Sunday’s double feature will be two Scifi films, “The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms” (1953) & “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” (1956)
The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms (1953) :
Based off of Ray Bradbury’s 1951 short story titled “The Fog Horn”, this creature feature would become the impetus of giant monster flicks like Godzilla, King Kong & others, and is credited with heavily influencing the kaiju genre among Japanese cinema. The story follows a group of scientists whose tests of nuclear weapons in the Arctic release a prehistoric creature from its icy prison, unleashing it upon an unprepared world.
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956):
Based off a screenplay of Jack Finney’s 1954 novel of the same name, this film noir focuses the quiet extraterrestrial invasion of a small Californian town. This non-conformist classic chronicles the story of how one local doctor notices something peculiar: friends and neighbors in the town are slowly being replaced by eerie lookalikes and he has to warn the rest of the world before it’s too late!
