Gyotaku: The Art of Fish Printing: Session 1 with Nate Garrett

Come learn the traditional Japanese art of fish printing with a modern twist.  Gyo – Fish, taku – to press/rub is an artform originating in Japan in the mid-1800’s where a real fish is used as a printing plate.  Ink is applied to the body of a fish and then paper is placed down and rubbed in order to capture an image of the fish.

Participants will learn the basics of fish printing using colored inks to create unique prints suitable for framing as stand alone pieces of art. Suminagashi papers are perfect for Gyotaku printing.
