Learn to craft a clay oyster shell at NISDA while learning about their lifecycle, ecology, and restoration from the Brant Point Shellfish Hatchery and Nantucket Conservation Foundation. You’ll get to experiment with hand building techniques like clay pulling, slip trailing, and under glazing to represent the dynamic morphology of our Eastern oyster. At the same time local scientists will support you to understand the life beneath and beyond the shell. At the end of the workshop if you choose to donate one (or more) of your ceramic shells it will go into the hatchery’s larval setting tank to see if real oyster babies will claim it as their home. Come connect as a community and ecosystem through the sustaining joys of creativity! All materials are provided by NISDA and children are welcome accompanied by an adult.
