This talk explores the myths that have cast the industry as a place of diversity, meritocracy, and opportunity for Black whalemen. Dr. Kayci Merritte will examine the experiences of African Americans aboard whaling ships, placing them within the broader context of slavery to better understand how ideas of freedom and opportunity were shaped, and often constrained, by the realities of the time.
