Community Stargazing at Altar Rock

Join us in celebrating International Dark Sky Week this year with an unforgettable evening of stargazing at Altar Rock, in the Middle Moors, hosted by the Nantucket Conservation Foundation, Nantucket Lights, and the Maria Mitchell Association.

This free, family-friendly event invites participants to experience Nantucket’s night sky as it was meant to be seen—dark, expansive, and full of wonder—while learning how light pollution threatens wildlife, human health, scientific research, and our ability to experience the stars. Protecting dark skies is a vital part of conserving Nantucket’s natural and cultural heritage, and this evening offers a chance to understand how simple lighting choices can make a meaningful difference.
Guided by expert stargazers and dark-sky advocates, attendees will explore constellations and seasonal celestial highlights in one of the island’s low-light environments. Together, we’ll reflect on why dark skies matter and how community action plays a critical role in preserving them for future generations.

Parking will be available along Altar Rock Road, with volunteers assisting attendees safely to the viewing area after dark. Registration is required as space is limited. Please ensure that you register all members of your group. If you are unable to make it please email to let us know so we can release spaces to other interested parties.

Please dress warmly and consider bringing blankets, as evening temperatures can be cool.
