Nantucket Noel kicks off at dusk on November 27th with the annual Tree Lighting. It will be filmed prior to airing on Nantucket Community Television at 4:30pm. This year, no matter where you are, you can enjoy the beauty of Nantucket as we prepare for this one of a kind holiday season. The pipeorgans on Nantucket are pulling out all their stops for Nantucket Community Music Center’s (NCMC) Holidays in Music: A Parade of Nantucket’s Pipe Organs!

This 90-minute broadcast on NCTV18 and streamed online, premiering Friday, November 27th right after the tree lighting, is the virtual equivalent of NCMC’s 29th Annual Organ Crawl. The program features the island’s six mechanical-action pipe organs and highlights music from end-of-year holidays – Thanksgiving through New Year — showcasing the American flare of Thanksgiving, the anticipation and festivity of Christmas, the exuberant ringing-in of the New Year…and much more!

Performing on the organs, four of which are over 100 years old, are Nantucket organists Jeff Cutts, Joe Hammer and Isaiah Williams, joined by renowned guest organist and composer Carson Cooman. The instruments, the oldest dating to 1831 and the newest to 2001, are housed in the First Congregational Church, St. Mary’s – Our Lady of the Isle, St. Paul’s (Episcopal), United Methodist Church and The Unitarian-Universalist Church.

There are four ways to watch this exciting broadcast on Friday, November 27 at TIME:

  1. Nantucket Community Music Center YouTube Page
  2. NCTV 18 Channel on a home television
  3. NCTV 18’s YouTube Page

Online Presentation: Seth Engelbourg, Grassland Restoration and its Benefits for Birds @ Online

Online Presentation: Seth Engelbourg, Grassland Restoration and its Benefits for Birds @ Online

Seth Engelbourg, the Naturalist Educator and Program Manager at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation, will present on a multi-year, grant-funded ecological restoration project. LLNF was awarded a grant from the Robert F. Schumann Foundation to improve habitat for grassland and heathland bird populations by removing non-native invasive tree species and restoring native vegetation.

Seth will discuss the pre-management monitoring that was conducted this year as well as our overall goals for the lifespan of the project. Global avian population studies show that grassland-dependent birds are one of the groups in fastest decline. This project will examine whether we are able to help support these species on a local level by restoring their habitat.

In addition to this project, Seth develops and leads LLNF’s environmental education programs for people of all ages and backgrounds, including our Birding Field Trips. He also assists with LLNF’s research program, particularly with projects related to birds as his academic background includes experience with avian population monitoring.

Cosponsored with the Linda Loring Nature Foundation. The program is free admission, but registration is required.

Ted Reinstein, Fighting Back – New England Underdogs @ Online
Jan 6 @ 7:00 pm – 8:15 pm
Ted Reinstein, Fighting Back - New England UnderdogsTed Reinstein, a correspondent on WCVB’s Chronicle and author, has always had his eye out – and his heart open – to the region’s true ‘underdogs. In this presentation, complete with photos and discussion, you’ll meet some the most interesting people and uplifting places.
Reinstein features underdogs like New Bedford’s Lynn Donahue, who seemed destined growing up to go the way of drugs and crime, but instead ended up adding the word, ‘Dr.’ to her name. Meet Mabray ‘Doc’ Kountze, who defied the odds – and prejudice – against him to become the first Black sportswriter to receive a Red Sox press pass. Sometimes an underdog can be an entire city, like Gloucester, which has found a way to forge on from a heyday long gone, and a future that’s uncertain. And sometimes an underdog is a small town’s beloved but beleaguered landmark, as in Putney, Vermont, the general store, like the mythical phoenix, rose up after burning down. Twice!
The program is free admission, but registration is required.
